This Deer Burger Soup is our favorite mixed vegetable recipe and one of our favorite deer burger recipes. It's perfect when you need some inspiration for winter soup ideas that can be thrown together in just over 30 minutes.
9-Year-Old-Approved Hamburger Soup Recipes
When our 9-year-old daughter used both fists to clutch the bowl and slurp down the last few bits of peas and carrots nestled in the broth, I knew I had another winner to add to my list of hamburger soup recipes. I asked what she thought of the deer burger soup. She wiped her mouth with her open palm in the most unrefined way and answered, "It smells gorgeous and tastes delicious!"
I harvested 5 deer this year, which means we have a lot of steaks, roasts, and burger in our freezer.
Deer burger recipes are a weeknight favorite for most parents in hunting families for many reasons. Using deer burger instead of buying ground beef saves money, it cooks up fast, and can be used in endless delicious ways. It can be an easy main ingredient to use in many meal rotations and allows your creativity to extend past spaghetti and sliders with some great hamburger soup recipes like Easy Venison Ravioli Soup or Stuffed Cabbage Soup.
Our $500/month Grocery Budget
If you're like me, you spend the extra effort probing your local grocery store advertisements for the best deals available each week. Even while being a full-time recipe developer and food photographer, I'm still able to keep our family grocery budget at $500/month. Most of you might be shocked at that number, but being a hunter who stocks his freezer with wild game meat every fall, I can limit my regular monthly purchases to milk and juice, flour, sugar, oils, rice and beans, pasta, as well as fruits and vegetables.
Wednesdays are the best day to shop for food, because this is when most grocery stores release new circulars, ensuring you have the first pick of the top deals. I usually buy generic brands at Walmart or Aldi for bigger savings, but then I saw that our neighborhood Hornbacher's was featuring Bird's Eye Mixed Vegetables for only 99 cents. I jumped at the opportunity to grab a few bags of corn, cut green beans, and carrots to use for this hamburger soup that quickly became our new favorite mixed vegetable recipe.
The Bird's Eye Mixed Vegetables are a great option for those looking for frozen mixed vegetables that taste good but don’t contain any extra ingredients like preservatives, artificial flavors, or colors because these frozen veggies have none of them. The bag contains just peas, corn, and carrots with no added sugar or salt!
Is It Always Cheaper To Buy Generic?
You might think this answer is always yes, but the reality is actually no. That is, if you’re into couponing and watching for deals in your weekly Wednesday circulars.
Most coupons are for name-brand items, and if you have a good coupon or a great deal on an item like I found for the mixed vegetables, it can drastically lower the price - sometimes even lower than the generic brand. So don’t automatically assume generic will be the least expensive choice every time. It pays to be aware of current prices, coupons and sales flyers.
Mixed Vegetable Recipe
Weeknights are almost always filled with meetings for organizations I volunteer for, helping our daughter with her math homework, and driving her to gymnastics practice. As a result, I love cooking recipes that can cut down on dinner prep time. The sooner I can get supper on the table, the less stress and anxiety there is in our lives. That's where this 35-minute meal comes in.
I love feeding my wife and daughter fresh produce from our backyard garden every summer and fall. However, now that we are in the throngs of a North Dakota winter, I thought nothing of it to add a bag of frozen mixed vegetables as the secret ingredient for this hearty burger soup.
