A lightly grilled naan, topped with a juicy burger and cool, tangy cucumber raita, brings together the best things about a burger and the bold flavors of India in only 20 minutes.

Why You'll Love Naan Burgers
If you've spent much time here at Wild Game & Fish, you already know that my goal has never been to make wild game cooking feel complicated. After years of developing recipes, teaching cooking classes, writing about wild game, and serving thousands of meals to hunters and their families, I've become convinced that venison deserves a permanent place in weeknight cooking rather than waiting for a special occasion. A great naan burger recipe is exactly the kind of meal that reminds us why.
Ground venison is one of the most versatile ingredients in my freezer. It cooks quickly, adapts beautifully to bold flavors, and turns an ordinary Tuesday into something your family actually looks forward to. These naan burgers combine warmly spiced venison, creamy cucumber raita, crisp vegetables, and soft, buttery naan into a meal that feels inspired by Indian flavors without asking you to master unfamiliar techniques.
My wife Melissa loves the cool cucumber raita that softens the spices, while our 11-year-old daughter Lucia happily devours anything involving her favorite naan.
Even better, this recipe comes together quickly enough for busy families who still want to gather around the dinner table before everyone disappears into homework, sports practices, and tomorrow's schedule
Why This Naan Burger Works with Venison
One of the biggest mistakes beginning cooks make with ground venison is treating it exactly like fatty ground beef. Venison is naturally much leaner, which means it rewards careful cooking and punishes neglect.
Here, melted butter mixed directly into the meat provides richness while helping the spices bloom throughout every bite. Garam masala delivers warm notes of cinnamon, cloves, cumin, coriander, and black pepper. Instead of overwhelming the venison, the seasoning simply gives it a welcoming handshake.
Cooking the patties over medium heat rather than blasting them over high heat allows a flavorful crust to develop before the interior overcooks. Look for deep browning instead of constantly flipping the burgers. Browning creates hundreds of flavorful compounds that simply don't develop when meat steams in its own juices.

The cucumber raita recipe deserves just as much attention. Peeling and seeding the cucumber removes excess moisture so the yogurt stays thick instead of becoming watery. The Greek yogurt brings a pleasant tanginess while cooling the spices, and fresh cilantro brightens every bite. Think of the raita as the burger's air conditioning on a warm summer evening.
Finally, broiling the naan after brushing it with butter transforms an ordinary flatbread into something crisp around the edges while remaining wonderfully tender inside. Those two minutes under the broiler make all the difference.
Choosing Ground Venison
Every ground venison recipe on this website is developed using 100% lean ground venison without pork fat blended into the meat. I prefer adding butter or oil myself because it gives me complete control over both flavor and texture.

If your processor adds pork fat to your burger, your patties may cook a little faster and render more fat into the skillet. Either version works, but knowing what you're cooking helps you achieve better results every time.
An instant-read thermometer removes all the guesswork. For pure venison, I pull these burgers at 130 degrees F before resting them. The short rest allows the juices to settle back into the meat instead of running across your cutting board.
Why Cucumber Raita Belongs on Naan Burgers
If you've never made a recipe for cucumber raita, prepare to wonder why you haven't been putting it on everything.
Traditional burger sauces often rely on mayonnaise for richness. Here, Greek yogurt creates the same creamy satisfaction while the cucumber provides freshness.
I often find my wife Melissa sneaking an extra spoonful while we're assembling dinner. I pretend not to notice because I'm usually doing exactly the same thing.

Building the Perfect Naan Burger
Once everything is cooked, assembly happens quickly.
The shredded lettuce creates a crisp foundation that protects the naan from becoming soggy. The seasoned tomato contributes sweetness and acidity, while feta cheese adds little bursts of salty richness that pair surprisingly well with the warm spices in the burger.
The thin slices of red onion provide just enough bite without overwhelming the sandwich.
Finally comes the generous spoonful of cucumber raita. Don't spread it too thin. Every bite should include enough of that cool yogurt sauce to balance the warm spices in the venison.
It's gloriously messy in exactly the right way. Keep plenty of napkins nearby and don't worry if a little raita escapes onto your plate. That's what the last piece of naan is for.

Tips for this Naan Burger Recipe
A few small details make this naan burger recipe especially dependable.
- Pat the burger patties gently instead of packing them tightly. Overworked ground venison becomes dense instead of tender.
- Wait until the oil is shimmering before adding the patties. If the skillet isn't fully heated, the burgers won't brown properly.
- After flipping the burgers, resist the temptation to press them with your spatula. Pressing only squeezes flavorful juices into the pan where they can't help your dinner.
- Finally, don't skip the three-minute rest. Those few minutes reward your patience with noticeably juicier burgers.

Naan Burger with Cucumber Raita
Ingredients
Cucumber Raita
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- ½ cup cucumber, peeled, seeded, and diced
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
- 1 minced green onion, both green and white parts
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
Burgers
- 1 pound ground venison or lean ground beef
- 1 ½ teaspoons garam masala
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon ground coriander
- 4 tablespoons melted butter, divided
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil or vegetable oil
- 8 pieces of naan
- 1 beefsteak tomato, sliced
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- ½ cup crumbled feta cheese
- 1 red onion, peeled and thinly sliced
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, stir together the Cucumber Raita ingredients: yogurt, cucumber, cilantro, green onion, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Set aside.
- Preheat oven to broiler setting.
- In a medium bowl, combine the ground venison with garam masala, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, cumin, black pepper, coriander, and 2 tablespoons melted butter. Divide the meat mixture into four equal portions, then flatten each into a patty about 4 inches wide and ½ inch thick.
- Add the oil to a 12-inch skillet and heat over medium until hot and shimmering but not smoking. Working in batches if needed, add 4 patties to the pan and cook until the underside is browned with a slight char, 3 minutes. Flip the burgers and cook until done to your liking, about 2 minutes more. I like my venison burgers cooked to 130 degrees F using an instant-read meat thermometer if they contain 100% ground venison, not pork. Transfer burgers to a large plate and let rest for 3 minutes while you toast the naan.
- Brush the top of each piece of naan using the remaining melted butter and place on the middle rack of the oven under the broiler setting and toast for 2 minutes.
- Season each slice of tomato with a pinch of salt and black pepper.
- Top each piece of naan with ¼ cup shredded lettuce, a slice of tomato, 2 tablespoons of crumbled feta cheese, a few pieces of sliced red onion, a cooked burger patty, and 2 Tablespoons of cucumber raita. Top with another piece of naan and serve.
